Dark Spots on Penis

If you noticed dark spots on your penis, it might be associated with a condition called penile melanosis, which is typically harmless. The formation of brown or black mark on penis is due to a phenomenon called hyperpigmentation. 

You can see brown spots on your penis head or on the shaft that are darker than the surrounding penis skin. Unless you have an underlying health condition, penile melanosis or penile lentiginosis is harmless and won’t transmit to another person.

Also called macules, dark spots on your penis from this condition do not come with any other symptom. The main distinguishing features of these macules are:

• They can be black or brown
• It does not hurt or bleed
• Not bigger than a centimeter
• Usually affects males aged between 15 and 72

Sometimes penile melanosis can be connected to lichen sclerosus, which is a condition that makes the penis skin thin and produces pale or white spots. However, it happens very rarely. It is treatable with topical medications and surgical processes, which sometimes involve foreskin removal.

Penile melanosis typically does not require treatment. Nonetheless, it will be ideal to talk to your doctor or go for an STD test to ensure that the condition isn’t something else you should worry about. 

Some people with a dark spot on penis head or around it may find them bothersome and embarrassing. In such cases, there are surgical options for the removal of the dark spots on penis. It involves removal of the pigmented skin, skin grafting, and skin resurfacing. 

Laser treatment is also available for those who want to remove the dark spots on penis without surgery. It may take several laser therapy sessions to completely get rid of the lesions. Although laser procedures are safe, you should make sure to talk with your doctor and ask if there are any risks involved before going for it.

Penile melanosis is not a harmful condition. It takes place when pigment builds up in the skin and creates dark patches. As no other symptoms occur with this condition, you don’t need treatment. But still opting for removal of the dark spots on your penis through cosmetic procedures is possible.

You shouldn’t see changes in your sexual health or your penis’ function after going for a surgical or laser treatment.
