Jock itch, also known as tinea cruris, is a fungal infection common in athletes. It causes blisters on the soft and moist areas of the body that may appear red and itchy. Jock itch is a fungal infection that is caused by dermatophytes, which are mold-like fungi. Aside from the skin, these fungi can also be present on the hair and nails. When jock itch blisters appear, there is no need to panic as they are typically harmless. However, it can multiply rapidly in warm and moist parts of the body and cause irritation and discomfort.
Jock itch blisters are more common in men than women. It is usually caused by the fungus that gives the athlete’s foot. It spreads from sharing infected clothing or towels. The rash and blisters may appear red and scaly and are often accompanied by itching or a burning sensation. Although it is usually harmless, timely treatment of the blisters can prevent the infection from spreading and minimize the discomfort. The most common treatment involves topical antifungal medications. It would also help to keep the infected area clean and dry.
If you are a male, an adolescent, an obese, a diabetic, or if you sweat profusely or have a weak immune system, you may be at a greater risk of developing jock itch blisters. But how would you know if you have jock itch blisters? Make sure you keep an eye on the common symptoms jock itch has. If you are affected with tinea cruris, you may experience a persistent itching or burning in the affected area that becomes red with irritation. You may also find the infection more severe when you exercise. Since it is a fungal infection, anti-itch creams may not be effective in relieving the symptoms. While jock itch usually affects the groin and inner thighs, it can also spread to the buttocks and abdomen.
If you have jock itch blisters, you may jump to the worse conclusions, such as suspecting you may have an STD like herpes. But you should try to differentiate between herpes vs jock itch. While jock itch is caused by a fungus, herpes is a viral infection. The blisters from jock itch usually appear at the edge of the rash around the genitals, whereas a herpes rash may affect all of the infected areas with blisters. Herpes blisters usually appear on the genitals and may develop a crusty appearance when the blisters heal, but jock itch normally does not.
While both jock itch and herpes may have similar visual symptoms, they are very different from each other. The symptoms of fungal infection that causes jock itch can be abated with antifungal topicals and get better with proper hygiene and keeping the area clean and dry. Herpes blisters, on the other hand, are caused either by HSV-1 or HSV-2 and may not affect a large area or appear in a circular pattern like jock itch blisters usually do.
