Penis Smells Fishy

It is okay to have penis odor sometimes. But if the smell gets really foul and persistent, maybe it’s time to give it a check. A smelling dick could indicate various underlying causes: poor hygiene, infection, or something more serious like an STD.

Most of these causes may not be severe problems. But if you ignore some important symptoms, you might regret it. Sometimes the foreskin smells fishy due to excessive build-up of dead skin in the area. Other times, a fishy smell penis could be because you contracted a sexually transmitted infection.

Why does my penis smell fishy?

Here are some reasons why the penis smells fishy. You can go through the characteristics and symptoms of these causes and determine your condition.

Smegma: It is a condition that causes the penis to smell fishy because of too much accumulation of dead skin cells on the shaft or the head of the penis. Sweating excessively also adds to the severity of this condition. You can get rid of this problem by maintaining good hygiene and keeping your genitals dry and clean. Ignoring it will lead to infection and inflammation of the penis.

If you see other symptoms like redness, irritation, and swelling, you should see the doctor and get treatment.

Yeast infection: Also known as thrush, yeast infection is a common reason why the penis smells fishy. It occurs when there is an overgrowth of Candida fungus. Look out for other signs, including itchiness, burning sensation, redness, and moist penis skin, to confirm that you have a yeast infection on your penis.

It usually happens when you don’t maintain proper hygiene of the genitals. Unprotected sex with someone who has the infection can also make you contract it. Yeast infection requires antifungal medications to treat it.

NGU (Non-gonococcal urethritis): It is an inflammation of the urethra caused by factors other than Gonorrhea, like Chlamydia. This condition spreads through unprotected sex and can cause other symptoms like sore penis tip, stinging urination, and smelly discharge.

Not treating NGU can lead to serious complications like infertility and infection of the prostate gland. NGU can be treated by antibiotics and takes about seven days to heal.

Urinary tract infection: A bacterial or viral infection of the urinary tract might be another reason why your penis smells fishy. You can get a UTI from kidney stones, diabetes, sexual activity, urinary retention, and swollen prostate.

Leaving UTI untreated can result in kidney infections in the long run. Other symptoms of UTI are a burning sensation while peeing, frequent urination, and cloudy urine. If you have a UTI, the doctor will give you antibiotics to treat it.

Sexually transmitted diseases: Two common STDs that could be the reasons why the penis smells fishy is Chlamydia and Gonorrhea. If you have Chlamydia, you might notice more symptoms like watery discharge, painful testicles, and painful urination. And if you have Gonorrhea, you will experience colored penile discharge, pain while peeing, and also foreskin inflammation.

These infections may sound like the other non-STD conditions. However, the difference is that you cannot treat them at home by yourself. You need proper medical help and treatment to get rid of any STD.

Try and refrain from any kind of sexual activity as long as you have these symptoms as they are infectious.

There are many possible causes for “my penis smell fishy.” The best way to diagnose and treat them is with medical help. You can go to your doctor or book an appointment at an STD testing center to know why your penis smells fishy.

It might be an awkward situation, but you are not the only one suffering from it. There are many reasons why the penis smells fishy, and it would be a bad idea to diagnose it yourself.

So head over to an STD clinic and find out why your penis smells fishy. The sooner you find out the cause, the sooner you will be able to treat the condition and continue living a normal, comfortable life.
